Problems & Solutions

Common issues in growing, buying, storing and using cordyceps — and exactly how to fix them.

Cultivation

Likely cause: Incomplete sterilization or contamination during inoculation.

Solution: Discard affected jars immediately (do not open indoors). Pressure-sterilize longer (60–90 min at 15 psi), let jars cool fully, and always inoculate in a still-air box or in front of a flow hood with sterilized surfaces and gloves.

Likely cause: Not enough light, fresh air, or humidity; temperature too high.

Solution: Move to ~12 hours/day of indirect light, keep 18–22°C, raise humidity to 85–90%, and increase fresh-air exchange by loosening lids or fanning. A slight temperature drop can also trigger pinning.

Likely cause: Weak culture, poor nutrition, or low light/CO₂ problems.

Solution: Use a fresh, vigorous culture; enrich the substrate with proper nutrients; ensure consistent light and good airflow to lower CO₂. Avoid drying out the substrate.

Likely cause: Old/weak culture or too-cold incubation.

Solution: Keep incubation around 18–22°C. Refresh your culture regularly on agar, and select the fastest, healthiest sectors for transfer.

Likely cause: Humidity too low or too much direct airflow.

Solution: Maintain high humidity with a humidifier or misting the chamber (not the substrate directly), and diffuse airflow so it is gentle rather than blasting.

Buying

Likely cause: Likely militaris sold as sinensis, or adulterated/fake product.

Solution: Genuine wild sinensis clearly shows a caterpillar body joined to a stalk and commands a high price. If it is bright orange clubs only, it is militaris. Buy from verified sellers and check for inserted wire/heavy fillers used to add weight.

Storage

Likely cause: Stored with moisture or in warm, humid conditions.

Solution: Keep thoroughly dried, in an airtight container with a desiccant, away from heat and light. Refrigerate for long-term storage.

Usage

Likely cause: Dose too low, poor-quality product, or too short a trial period.

Solution: Ensure an adequate daily amount (≈1–3 g whole), use authentic lab-verified product, and give it several weeks of consistent daily use.
